Test for selection on polymorphic isozyme genes using the population cage method.

چکیده
Published experimental data of several species of Drosophila using the population cage method were reexamined. The authors of these works have claimed that selection operates on polymorphic isozyme genes. Since selection coefficients (s) estimated by us for the above data, assuming overdominance, or for some cases, additivity between alleles, were too large (s greater than 0.1), we conclude that these experimental results do not reflect the effects of the single loci in question; rather, we suggest that careful experimentation and judgment are required for testing with the population cage method whether or not selection actually operates on single genes.

The genetic structure of natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster. XII. Linkage disequilibrium in a large local population.
Seven hundred and three second chromosomes were extracted from a Raleigh, North Carolina population of Drosophila melanogaster in 1970. Additionally, four hundred and eighty-nine third chromosomes were extracted from a large cage population founded from the flies in the 1970 Raleigh collection. The alpha glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase-1, malate dehydrogenase-1, alcohol dehydrogenase, and al...

In order to test the interaction effect of overdominance and random genetic drift on the formation of linkage disequilibria under the condition of multiplicative gene action, linkage disequilibria between isozyme genes, inter se, and between polymorphic inversions and isozyme genes were tested for the second chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster sampled from two isolated Pacific islands and on...
متن کاملDiagnosis of Breast Cancer Subtypes using the Selection of Effective Genes from Microarray Data
Introduction: Early diagnosis of breast cancer and the identification of effective genes are important issues in the treatment and survival of the patients. Gene expression data obtained using DNA microarray in combination with machine learning algorithms can provide new and intelligent methods for diagnosis of breast cancer. Methods: Data on the expression of 9216 genes from 84 patients across...

The genotypes for calpastatin (CAST) and calpain (CAPN) loci were determined by PCR-RFLP and PCRSSCPmethods. Blood samples were collected from 200 pure-bred Zel sheep from Shirang’s Zel sheep Breeding Station located in south-west of Golestan, Iran. Extraction of genomic DNA was performed based on the modified salting out method. Based on results, two investigated loci were polymorphic an...
متن کاملGene Identification from Microarray Data for Diagnosis of Acute Myeloid and Lymphoblastic Leukemia Using a Sparse Gene Selection Method
Background: Microarray experiments can simultaneously determine the expression of thousands of genes. Identification of potential genes from microarray data for diagnosis of cancer is important. This study aimed to identify genes for the diagnosis of acute myeloid and lymphoblastic leukemia using a sparse feature selection method. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, the expressio...
